Turquoise Jewelry Mines

Much turquoise jewelry is made from stones mined in the southwest. Following is a partial list of American turquoise mines:

Ajax Turquoise: The Ajax turquoise mine is near Royston Nevada and gives us light blue turquoise with dark blue veins. This is one of the newer mines.

Bisbee Turquoise: Located in Bisbee, Arizona, this mine was one of the first to put turquoise on the market. As with many turquoise mines, this is a copper mine. Bisbee is known for its dark blue color and black matrix. This mine is now closed but these stones are used in much turquoise jewelry.

Battle Mountain Turquoise: This turquoise is highly sought after by collectors to make turquoise jewelry as this mine is now closed. Opened in 1934, it produced both green and blue stones with a fair amount of matrix.

Cerrillos Turquoise: Located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, this mine was mined by the ancient Pueblo tribes between 1300 and 1600 and is the oldest turquoise mine in North America. Turquoise was later extracted by the San Marcos Pueblo and was traded from Mexico to the east coast. To this day, there are many dig sites in the area.

Cripple Creek Turquoise: Miners discovered this turquoise mine while looking for gold in Colorado and this mine is still in operation.

Dry Creek Turquoise: Discovered in 1993 near Battle Mountain, Nevada, this mine produces what is known as Sacred Buffalo Turquoise. Ground metals give turquoise its color and, as there are none here, these stones have no color. This type of turquoise has been found no where else.

Kingman Turquoise: This turquoise mine is located near Kingman Arizona. Kingman turquoise is blue with a white matrix and is one of the more common stones to make turquoise jewelry.

Lone Mountain Turquoise: Located in Esmeralda county, Nevada, this turquoise is known for its spider web matrix. This will hold its color and is one of the more valuable of turquoises.

Manassa Turquoise: Located in Colorado, this turquoise mine was mined by the ancient pueblo people, lost, and then rediscovered by gold miners in the late 1800’s. These stones have many shades of green with a golden matrix.

Morenci Turquoise: The Morenci is located in southeastern Arizona and is a copper mine. The turquoise extracted from here, much carried out by the workers and miners, is a dark blue turquoise with irregular iron pyrite matrix.

Number 8 Turquoise: Calin, Nevada is the home of this mine. It was active from the 1930’s through the 1950’s and produced a light, powder-blue turquoise with brown, black, or reddish spider web matrix.

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise: Located near Globe, Arizona, this turquoise is a light blue with no matrix. This is a large mine and produces many stones. This can be seen in much of the Navajo turquoise jewelry.
